AI is everywhere: writing code, generating campaigns, automating support, and increasingly operating as a true colleague instead of just a tool. The power of AI isn’t just about writing great prompts; it’s about knowing what matters, what outcomes you want, and what risks and values frame the task. The latest viral story - “Claude Code Stunned This Google Engineer” (besides showcasing a Google engineer using non-Google AI coding tools!) -demonstrates the marvel of AI improvisation when combined with human expertise. But it also reminds us: experienced, skilled humans who understand the real instructions to give AI are the difference between average and world-class results.

But is this the forever future? Will “agentic” AI eventually know more than us: adapting, creating, and self-directing to a point where humans are mere spectators? Here’s the way I look at where we are, what will change, and what will likely always matter.

Why Prompting Is Needed Today

Even the best models still require humans to fill crucial gaps:

A. Goal Ambiguity We say “make it good,” but “good” depends on taste, context, business goals, risks, and constraints. Even now, much of prompting I've seen is just making the implicit explicit because AI can’t reliably infer what’s important without help.

B. Context Limitations Models don’t know your codebase conventions, brand voice, customer sensitivities, internal policies, or what’s changed in your business this week. Humans “bridge” this context gap.

C. Reliability + Verification Even when AI can do the work, someone must evaluate correctness, catch subtle errors, and decide what is “acceptable,” especially in high-stakes situations. Generative models need deterministic scaffolding to become dependable agents in complex environments. Think of it this way:

  • Generative AI = imagination + language + pattern intuition
  • Deterministic / symbolic systems = rules + verification + guaranteed correctness + memory structure

Will Agentic Systems Eventually Need Humans Less?

Yes. In many domains, explicit instructional labor will shrink. Modern and next-gen “agentic systems” will:

  • Infer goals from user behavior
  • Maintain persistent memory across projects
  • Self-evaluate, run tests, and simulate outcomes
  • Generate and refine their own prompts
  • Learn from feedback to auto-tune their approaches

The transition is from AI as a tool (explicit commands) to AI as a colleague/operator (requires intent + oversight). Already, many systems scaffold themselves: plan, execute, reflect, and repair with less human micromanagement.

But Will Humans Become Unnecessary?

Not unless “unnecessary” means not involved in execution. Humans stay necessary for fundamental reasons:

  • The market for meaning: Products and content ultimately serve humans, and only people decide what “feels right” or what fits brand or culture.
  • Power and trust: True autonomy means new questions: who controls the agent? Who checks the black box? Transparency, explainability, and oversight aren’t technical issues: they’re governance challenges.

The Skill That Will Remain: From Prompting to Specification

The mechanical act of step-by-step prompting will fade fast. What endures and grows in value is operational, systems, and design thinking:

  • Defining outcomes and constraints: “We need conversion lift, no compliance risk, and brand consistency.”
  • Setting real success metrics, guardrails, and priorities
  • Decomposing goals and evaluating results
  • Recognizing failure modes, outliers, and edge cases
  • Exercising judgment: what tradeoffs matter, what is “good enough,” and what should be vetoed or redone

The future is less about micro-managing and more about acting as product lead, editor, strategist, risk manager, creative director, and systems designer. In other words, moving up the stack.

The “Agency Frontier”: What About AI That Truly Self-Directs?

I believe that truly self-directed AI (systems that set their own goals, generate new strategies, and reconfigure themselves) will happen first in bounded environments like:

  • Autonomous coding agents maintaining a product
  • Marketing agents that run and iterate campaigns
  • Sales agents that iterate outreach and learn what works
  • Research agents that scan, synthesize, and propose experiments

But these agents will still be bounded by:

  • Access control
  • Policies and guardrails
  • Audit trails and human oversight (“veto power”)
  • Reward systems set by people

True general autonomy? Technically conceivable, but society may accept it only in low-risk or highly measurable domains.

Knowing “More” Is Not the Same as Knowing What Matters

Agentic AI may be able to simulate expertise and optimize outcomes, but humans still control the targets, the meanings, and the definitions of “success.” Goals change: moods, politics, market shifts, fear, and opportunity are all human. So is meaning: identity, narrative, pride, fairness, novelty, belonging, and the ability to create and shape a story.

Three Plausible Trajectories

  • Most Likely: Humans decide, AI executes. Humans remain as goal-setters, reviewers, and the ones who handle exceptions.
  • Likely in Many Fields: Humans become curators, auditors, and risk/compliance guides—AI runs routine operations.
  • In Some Areas: AI operates with autonomy (ad tech, ecommerce, supply chain, trading), but humans still set the mandate, constraints, and vetoes.

What Lasts: Operational Thinking, Not Just Prompting

Prompting as a tactical skill? Temporary edge. Prompting as a way of thinking: goal articulation, problem decomposition, constraint setting, output evaluation, and judgment? Permanent.

That’s operational and strategic thinking and it’s how the best humans will remain invaluable.
